When I ran data centers and shipping operations my people were not very senior and it required me to direct their efforts very closely. Later I got to work with some very senior people. They did not require any direction on the job. My job quickly changed from directing my people's activity to getting them the resources they needed and getting out of their way while they got the job done. I was invited to work on special projects. I was new to my position when I was invited to work on a team examining new computer architectures. There were several consulting engineers on the team and in retrospect I held them in too high esteem. I put forward a proposal that one of them shot down. I thought he must have knowledge that I lacked so I didn't fight hard for my proposal. About ten years later the approach that I envisioned was independently realized in the Beowulf Cluster developed by NASA. But I feel vindicated. Much later I saw the engineer that shot down my idea asking for help or the Internet to get a modem working on his Macintosh.

Greater 3rd party content improved likelihood of a sale but, exponentially increased the time (and cost) required to make the sale. It also considered the impact of support cost. The study concluded these sales could actually have significant negative impact on the bottom line.
