July 1998 to November 1998 Cahners(Proj. Mgr. - virus, Y2K, SW compatibility) Tested Macintosh hardware to confirm it was Y2K compliant. Collected list of all Macintosh software vendors and obtained statements of compliance. Determined what had been believed to be a network problem, for several months, was a virus. Selected virus software. Developed procedures for a technician to install anti-virus software, perform survey of software for Y2K project, and do basic preventive maintenance. Complaints, to help desk, from users fell to one-half their previous level before the project was finished. Identified major software incompatibilities between NetWare server software and Macintosh systems. Discovered and worked to correct installation errors caused by 3rd party installation of Outlook on Macintosh. March 1998 to July 1998 Computer Town (Depot Level Tech. Support - Macintosh) Performed depot level maintenance on Macintosh or IBM compatible computers and their peripherals. December 1997 to March 1998 Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (Tech. Support - Macintosh) Advised on Macintosh to IBM compatible migration. Identified problems with backup strategy and procedures. Repaired Macintosh or IBM compatible computers and their peripherals. October 1997 to November 1997 Self Improvement - NT Training Took three core classes at New Horizons training center. The courses included NT server and workstation administration plus additional study of WWW and related Internet services and content development on MS/IIS and UNIX servers. June 1997 to September 1997 Vacation Part of the time in Beijing China. October 1996 to May 1997 GTE-BBN/AeroTek (Tech. Support NOC, WHOC, Firewalls) Monitored internet sites, firewalls, and websites, responded to alarms, contacted customers, logged onto routers, firewalls, and web hosts, troubleshot systems, effected repair or directed field service and telco personnel to correct the problem. <A NAME="part8">June 1996 to October 1996 Self employed (DTP, Multimedia, Consulting) Returned to running my DTP, multimedia, and consulting business. April 1996 to May 1996 Digital Equipment Corporation / New Boston (Draftsman) Technical Writer/Draftsman Created "as built" drawings and block diagrams of complex systems using AutoCAD R11 on ULTRIX and produceddocumentation, including tables and artwork with DECwrite. October 1995 to April 1996 Self employed (Tech. Writing) Technical Writer/Illustrator Researched wrote and typeset the manual for a multimedia presentation system. It included a large number of cross-references, an index, many illustrations and flow-charts. The writing was done using Microsoft Word and Works. Tables were created in Microsoft Excel. Artwork was scanned with Ofoto, traced with Adobe Streamline. Original artwork was created in Adobe Illustrator and Aldus Freehand. Bitmap graphics were manipulated with Adobe PhotoShop. Engineering drawings were created in AutoCAD R12 on Windows then transported to MiniCad+ on the Macintosh and exported as EPS. The final document was typeset, with cross-references and an index in FrameMaker. October 1994 to October 1995 TWD & Associates (Sr. Systems Analyst) Recommended and implemented software and hardware to support the PEO/USW Acquisitions Branch. Surveyed their mission and provided recommendations in a wide range of technologies. One unique project required developing the hardware, network, training, staff requirements, and costs to support secure videoconferences. February 1993 to October 1994 Self employed (DTP, Multimedia, Consulting) Start and ran a Macintosh based desktop publishing, audio and video studio which provided: Desktop publishing services with MS Word, Nisus, PageMaker, FrameMaker, and Ready -Set - Go!. Created 2D graphics with Illustrator, Freehand, Persuasion, PowerPoint, and Fractal Design Painter. Created 3D graphics with Infini-D, MacroModel, and MiniCad+. Created multimedia audio and video with Sound Tools, Pro Tools, Premier, Video Shop, Director, and CoSA After Effects. Used a variety of Operating systems and peripherals: Macintosh II, IIci, SE/30, SE, DUO 230, Power Computing, and Wintel computers. Macintosh O/S 6,7,8 and A/UX, Microsoft DOS, Windows, NT (workstation and server), LINUX, and OS2. Scanners, internal and external as well as removable and fixed hard drives, Postscript laser and ink jet Printers. AppleTalk and TCP/IP networks. Hardware and software consulting and maintenance. Provided trouble-shooting and repair in heterogeneous Macintosh, NT, Windows, and UNIX environments. September 1974 to February 1993 Digital Equipment Corporation Principle Engineer 1990-1993 Engineering Group Leader Responsible for Open Branch Platform [OBP] system specifications and development of test designs to ensure that Local users could gain predictable and reliable access to applications running on DOS, WINDOWS 3.1, ULTRIX, and MVS over LAN and WAN links. The OBP was a RISC/ULTRIX engine acting as server and general purpose computing environment for twenty local Windows 3.1 computers. Access from all OBP components was made via SNA to a remote IBM mainframe environment. Developed test plans, test designs, executed tests, and prepared reports on VAX/VMS and RISC/ULTRIX (UNIX) servers. Introduced the use of sampling to analyze client-server performance. Introduced SAS in the analysis of client-server performance data and SAS graphics for its presentation. Previous analysis was all done with Microsoft EXCEL without any control of data sampling. Produced sales and sales support training materials for the OBP. The course materials consisted of existing material on IBM networking which was edited and expanded with OBP specific information. Created more than 100 new slides, in one week, using Aldus Persuasion, and one secretary to help with typing. DEC Corporate Networks Sales Support Manager 1986-1993 Managed the group responsible for pre-sales support of multi-vendor networks to Digital's top 100 customers. Mission to create viable network solutions, with strong DEC content, to components and services from third parties. All programs were significant. One pilot program was worth in excess of $14 million. Networks Marketing Manager for Laboratory Data Products Product Line 1985-1986 Senior software consultant for major software migration project involving several hundred data centers. Consulted on software design as well as coordinating rollout with other groups who shared the same data center hardware. Sr. Software Consultant 1984-1985 The Branch Inventory Management System (BIMS) tracked field service parts. A major change to the operating system mandated a major change to the application. Responsible for strategic planning and technical consulting on a mission critical application deployed in hundreds of locations worldwide. Operating system changes mandated major changes in all applications. Many locations ran other mission critical applications that would not upgrade at the same time. There was a copy of the BIMS system in every field service branch in the world. Data Center Manager 1983-1984 Data Center Manager for DECUS library after managing Digital's Educational Services data center. The DECUS data center reproduced or contracted for the reproduction of media on virtually all Digital hardware, operating systems. Media types included paper tape, magnetic tape, source listings, disks, and so on. As a convenience to customers, conversions from one O/S and media to another were provided. Data center personnel provided administrative support, media reproduction, distribution, order processing, shipping, billing, wrote and typeset several catalogs each year, provided customer services world-wide (including East Bloc countries). Data Center Manager for DEC's Educational Services Administrative System. Supervised and trained operators developed systems and procedures. Instructor & Course Developer 1974-1983 Established an enviable track record as an innovative course developer and presenter. First CAI program in Digital. Developed the course maps and material for Intro to Minis and Basic Electronics Course. Taught the maintenance of the Introductory PDP-11 and Peripherals Course, the in-depth PDP-11/60 Maintenance Course and an Introduction To Software and Operating Systems for Field Service Technicians. This was the first software course with on-line access to a machine in the classroom. Previously two students were teamed and they share one machine between them. This innovation permitted students, in a two-week course, to accomplish the course goals three days earlier than ever before. The three additional days were used to reinforce some key concepts as well as add 30% more material to the course. | |||
